Thanks for the article and the recommendation for the book. Could you please link to Powells.com for books? It's the best bookstore in the western world, and independent bookstores need our support in these trying times, far more than soulless amazon. And I am in no way affiliated with them, other than being a happy customer.

Hooray for Hopkins!

Speaking of which, this year is the centennial of the Flexner Report, which said, in short and fine, "more or less every medical school in North America is total crap (especially Boston University), with the major exception of Johns Hopkins; I declare it to be the exemplar upon which all modern medical education should be based".

One of the robust but unfortunate legacies of the remarkable Dr. Halsted is the concept of overnight call shifts for residents. The safety and sanity of this practice are well-refuted. Its actual disappearance seems to be somewhat slower.

Perhaps if the Old Holies were aware that Dr. Halsted relied heavily on cocaine to maintain his overnight wakefulness we'd have abandoned the ridiculous idea years ago in favour of saner practices.

Halsted sounds like many of the bright, talented self medicating ADD/ADHD professionals I've worked with over the years.

An abrasive, abrupt, unfeeling, drug-addicted but brilliant doctor? It's a real life Gregory House!
