Speaking of science and journalism, the media health headlines have been awash the past couple days in the new Mediterranean Diet study from Spain. For some reason they are all reporting a 30% reduction in cardio events. It isn't surprising that they are reporting relative risk reduction instead of absolute risk reduction but by my reading it should be a 24% and a 12% relative risk reduction in the 2 Med diet groups, not 30%. I think 30% came from some magical rounding of large numbers. The absolute risk reduction seems to be 1% (similar to statins) over the course of 5 years but obviously that's not a very catchy headline.

Excellent to see SBM upvoting science journalism that's done well. The piece by Ortega is very detailed and interesting...if scary. It does lead me to question the monitoring on other standard tests as well. There definitely appears to be room for improvement there.
