Launching the SBM Facebook Page

As the medical student leading the charge on SBM’s social media presence, I’m happy to announce the creation of the Science-Based Medicine Facebook Page!

After we recently revived the Twitter account – which everyone should follow for the latest in SBM goodness – this page was the next logical step. It will serve as a platform for complementary and alternative media (CAM) to the site: quotes, links, events, and posts that don’t necessarily merit a full post on the blog but are worthwhile nonetheless. It will also serve as a forum for followers to contribute their own content (after moderation) to the SBM community as well. Please visit the page, “Like” the page, and recommend it to all your friends and family.

    Great, I guess. But I’m still trying to figure out why I would want to offer myself as a free commodity to Mark Zuckerberg to sell for pennies* to shitheels who desperately want to sell me crap that I don’t want to buy. I understand that its all ‘the thing’ but I guess I’m just too old school to grasp the innate coolness of the whole enterprise.

    I’m struggling to understand how this is differs from, say, a members site: SBMGroupies.org or something. I understand that I’m being flippant but I really am at a total loss. Is moderation easier or more predictable with Facebook? Is it easier to post jpegs of cats wearing ‘Vax Me!’ caps? Enquiring minds want to know!

    *Actually about $5. FB has revenues a little better than $5 BILLION and claims 1.1 billion users though that figure is widely believed to be inflated.

      Look, if you don’t like Facebook, then just don’t use the SBM Facebook page, OK? No one’s forcing you to. It’s not as though we’re moving the blog there. However, a lot of people are on Facebook, and it’s much easier to use from our perspective than putting together a forum from scratch. These days a blog is nowhere if it’s not on Facebook and Twitter at least.

        That’s fine David. I didn’t suggest anyone was being dragged kicking and screaming to FB. I simply took the opportunity to make the entirely fact based point that Facebook’s business model is selling its users’ information.

    An ethical transaction is one where a product or service is exchanged at an agreed price. The ethics of a transaction where both the product (you) and the price (whatever they can sell whatever they can glean about you for) are quite intentionally disguised escapes me.

    Clicking the FB is broken in Chrome OS X (stays on same page). The link looks right in the source code, but something is stopping it from working.

    I agree with Donna B – the main “profile picture” used should be changed, as it is of the (inappropriate) Staff of Caduceus rather than the (appropriate) Rod of Asclepius. This very point was brought up by Dr. Novella himself in his course for the Great Courses, “Medical Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths”.

    I somewhat share your thoguhts on it. I’d actually like to be rid of FB myself. I deleted my account a couple years back but had to create a new one just to be part of groups relevant to my medical school and extra curricular endeavors. The (perhaps sad) reality of it is that the best way to reach lots of people and get a lot of notoriety is indeed through FB and Twitter. The sadder part for me is that I do easily become addicted to FB and end up wasting a lot of time there, but such is the price I pay. Thankfully I cannot for the life of me get into Twitter.

    For an example just look at the FB page “I Fucking Love Science.” It went from a single individual undergrad with a few dozen friends to millions of likes and being interviewed on CNN, ABC, talking with Michio Kaku, Bill Nye, etc etc etc all inside of a year.

    It is merely a very easy forum for vast amplification of the core message of SBM. Whether or not you agree with it and like it or can “get into it” matter not to the hundreds of millions of people who are indeed accessible through it. I think it is a great move – albeit not one that I would personally be able to lead so my thanks to Bobby for it.

    Oh yeah, and I absolutely agree with the need to switch the the Rod of Asclepius. Should be pretty obvious why.

      Heh – I once tried to friend you on FB – who would have thought there would be so many Andrey Pavlov’s in the world. Talk about hiding in plain sight…

      Thankfully I cannot for the life of me get into Twitter.

      I used to be that way. I signed up for an account under my real name for SBM and for a second account for my not-so-super-secret other blog. I tried it for a while and didn’t really “get it.” As a result, for the longest time my Twitter accounts consisted of nothing other than auto-Tweets of SBM posts and posts from my not-so-secret other blog. However, over the last year or so, combatting pro-Burzynski propaganda, I’ve learned to use Twitter and am now fairly active. Actually, I’m intermittently active. There will be occasional days when I’ll send thirty Tweets, and then days and days will go by without my sending a single one, other than auto-Tweets.

      Nahhh. Think of it as a place for Facebook members who read SBM to carry on about other topics relevant to SBM or to alert us to potential blog topics.

  8. Of course, you can open a fake account (Fakebook?), but use a throwaway email, Zuckerberg’s machinery will nag you forever should you have the nerve to not pay much attention to Facebook.

    Pro-FB myself. It’s a great way to stay connected to friends from previous jobs and extended family, etc. Glad SBM is on FB, although I hear the young folks are leaving FB for Instagram…not sure how one could promote SBM on Instagram. :)

    1. FB can be a great tool, I’ve found bilingual native speakers of lesser encountered African languages and made friendship — I’m not sure how else this would have happened so easily from my armchair here in rural Wisconsin. For this I’m ecstatic.

      Yeah, I signed up for an Instagram account and have yet to use it other than for a couple of experimental posts. it just doesn’t have much usefulness for me. As for Pinterest, my main reaction has thus far been, WTF do I do with this?

    Think of Pinterest like visual, shareable, organized links. It’s great for bookmarking images you want to come back to: fashion, travel, decor, food, crafts, design, art, visual humor, etc. Also, you get to see the cool stuff your friends are into (“Oh Judy is on a steam punk costume kick, Ron is looking at science projects for kids”). Following a good number of like minded friends makes it more fun, otherwise you’re just getting a bunch of random images from strangers.
